Apple Breaks the Barrier: AI Finally Launches in China After 2-Year Wait
After more than two years of regulatory hurdles and technical adjustments, Apple has achieved the impossible: Apple Intelligence is officially live in mainland China. Starting with the iOS 26.5 Beta 1, Chinese users can finally experience the AI features that have been available globally since late 2024.
However, this isn't the standard version of Apple Intelligence we know. To comply with strict local laws, Apple had to completely re-engineer the system's "brain," swapping its internal models for a localized powerhouse.
Powered by Alibaba: The Qwen 3 Integration
While global versions of the iPhone rely on Apple's proprietary models and Google Gemini for complex tasks, the Chinese variant uses Alibaba’s Qwen 3 neural network. This partnership was crucial for passing the rigorous state-mandated security assessments, which reportedly involved an intensive 2,000-question audit by local regulators.
