"SIM Not Supported" vs "No Service": Diagnosing iPhone Network Errors

You pop your SIM card into a newly purchased used iPhone, expecting the carrier logo to appear. Instead, you are met with an error. But the specific words on the screen tell two entirely different stories.

Many users confuse "SIM Not Supported" with "No Service" (or "SOS Only"). Knowing the difference is critical, because one means your phone is simply tied to a specific carrier, while the other means your phone is globally blacklisted.

Error 1: "SIM Not Supported" (The Activation Screen)

If you insert a SIM card and your iPhone immediately kicks you back to the "Hello" activation screen, eventually displaying a pop-up saying "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported", you are dealing with a Carrier Lock (Sim-Lock).

SIM-LOCK

What it means

The phone is perfectly fine, not stolen, and not broken. It is simply programmed on Apple's servers to only accept a SIM card from one specific network (e.g., AT&T, Vodafone, SoftBank). To fix this, you must run a GSX Check to find out WHICH carrier it is locked to, and then request an unlock from them.

Error 2: "No Service" or "SOS Only"

If you insert your SIM, the phone accepts it (you stay on your home screen), but the top right corner endlessly searches and then displays "No Service" or "SOS Only", you have a much bigger problem.

BLACKLIST

What it means

This usually means the hardware is trying to connect to the cell tower, but the carrier tower is actively rejecting the connection. In 90% of cases, this means the device's IMEI has been placed on the GSMA Blacklist (reported lost, stolen, or unpaid).

Technical Glossary

Carrier Lock
A software restriction applied by Apple at the request of a telecom provider.
Baseband Failure
A hardware issue (motherboard level) where the modem breaks. This also causes "No Service" and can be verified by typing *#06#. If the IMEI doesn't appear, the baseband is dead.
