Mastering Apple Warranty: Does Your Used iPhone Have Coverage?
Buying a used iPhone with AppleCare+ is a smart move. It covers broken screens and battery replacements. But not all AppleCare plans are the same, and some can disappear overnight.
Types of Coverage
- Apple Limited Warranty (1 Year): Comes free with every new device. Covers hardware defects (bad logic board, camera fail). Does NOT cover cracks or water damage.
- AppleCare+ (Paid): Adds accidental damage protection. You pay a small fee (deductible) for screen repairs ($29).
- AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss: If the phone is stolen, Apple replaces it. Crucial for second-hand buyers to check!
Risk: Monthly vs Upfront Payment
Transfer: Follows Serial Number
The "Monthly Payment" Trap
This is the most common issue in 2026. Apple allows users to pay for AppleCare+ monthly.
The Risk: You buy a phone that shows "AppleCare+ Active". The previous owner cancels their credit card or stops paying the $9.99/month subscription. The coverage ends immediately.
The Fix: Always verify if the plan is "Paid Upfront" (usually for 2 years) or "Monthly". Only "Paid Upfront" plans are safe to rely on for second-hand deals.
Does it Transfer?
Yes. AppleCare+ is linked to the Serial Number of the device, not the user's Apple ID. You do not need to call Apple to transfer it (unless you want to transfer ownership for refund purposes).
"Express Replacement" Scams
Fraudsters sometimes use the Serial Number of a device to request an "Express Replacement" from Apple (claiming the phone is broken). They get a new phone, and Apple disables the old one (the one you might be buying). Always check if the serial number has pending repair cases.
Verify Warranty & Repair History
Check if the device has valid coverage and if it has a history of multiple repairs.
